Paranoia Growing at Jang Group

May 24th, 2010 | By | Category: Jang

Reading The News today, one would be forgiven for thinking that Jang was an oppressed minority rather than the wealthy corporation that it is. What is, perhaps, more interesting, however, is that the news organization has begun to write paranoid stories about super secret conspiracies against some of its employees. As usual, though, Jang knows just who the conspirators are.

To be sure, this blog does not condone any violence or destruction of property at demonstrations against Jang and Geo offices in Karachi. If the people have a problem with Jang, they certainly have the right to air their greivances – but this should be done only in a peaceful and constructive manner.

That said, Jang’s reaction in an editorial in today’s The News is a bit over-the-top. The hyperventilating writers call the protests “the face of facism,” not realizing that a protest by the people against a large corporation that engages in political propaganda is the opposite of facism. Then, Jang goes on to blame the present government for the protests, despite not providing one bit of evidence for such a claim.

Its vandalism, its violence on those guarding our offices and the harassment of our workers, all are the latest feathers in the crown of the present ‘democratic’ government which has made no bones about its intention to target this group, and through it the whole of free and independent media.

Jang, of course, sees itself as the ‘freedom fighter’ who is ‘speaking truth to power’ (this despite the fact that top Jang journalists such as Ansar Abbasi, Shaheen Sehbai, and Hamid Mir have consistently had a distinct problem with ‘truth’) and the present government as the face of all that is evil.

We are aware of the price of truth spoken in the face of power, particularly when power is reeking of corruption, incompetence and illegitimacy from top to toe.

Just yesterday, Ansar Abbasi wrote an article that made some claims about decisions made at a secret meeting at the Presidency (how would Ansar Abbasi of all people know anything that was discussed at Presidency?), and then made his own pronouncement that the government is in contempt of court!

This is not “speaking truth to power,” as Jang might want to believe, but simply making up storied and issuing pretend court decisions. It’s just silly.

But the paranoia does not stop there. Today’s The News features an unattributed article that claims that government is preparing fake tapes of Jang reporters. The article does not provide any sources, only saying that “highly reliable sources” have told him that

Surprisingly, however, in a departure from the past practice the smear campaign shall not be carried out by the Interior Ministry, but actually is being overseen by a group of intelligence functionaries considered very close to the bosses of the Law Ministry.

In order to believe this, you have to believe that the government is carrying out a super-top-secret plan to create fake tapes, and that they are telling the people who are targeted. It simply makes no sense.

Reading the list of supposed targets, though, I couldn’t help but chuckle.

The hit list comprises (so far): Hamid Mir (Host, Capital Talk), Shaheen Sehbai (Group Editor, The News), Ansar Abbassi (Editor Investigations, The News) Mohammad Malick (Resident Editor, The News Islamabad-Rawalpindi), Kamran Khan (Host, Aaj Kamran Khan Kay Saath) and Dr Shahid Masood (Host, Meray Mutabiq).

Ah, yes. Six of the most inflated egos in journalism today. Also six of the people who are, quite frankly, some of the worst journalists around. Certainly each of these would love to believe that the entire government was focused on him. While they are preening their pretty haircuts, they fantasize about being the heroes of the modern world fighting against the ‘fascists’ that were elected by the people.

If we could run power plants on the egos of some of our journalists, we would not have any energy crisis for centuries. Sadly, one of the many side-effects of an inflated ego is a growing sense of paranoia. The egoist believes that everyone is out to get him, even though the truth is most people don’t even care about him. There seems to be a growing sense of paranoia within Jang. Let’s hope they are able to find a little bit of humilty before their paranoia consumes them completely.

Sindh nationalists stand for return of judges By Shaheen Sehbai & Ansar Abbasi Monday, March 16, 2009

WASHINGTON/ISLAMABA D: The US capital and the world is watching for the ultimate battle on the D-Day on Monday in what has now turned into a fatal fight to the finish between two personalities — President Asif Zardari and Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. Only one will survive. Zardari has all the power that anyone can muster in any country, but he also has the biggest stakes on line. His power grab in the last few months is not helping him and he is fighting a losing battle.

Iftikhar Chaudhry has no powers but he has the entire country behind him and that makes him the most powerful commander leading his troops to ultimate victory. His troops, Nawaz Sharif, Ali Kurd, Aitzaz Ahsan, the media, lawyers, politicians, rights activists and the people at large have been deceived so many times that no more promises or assurances of the Zardari camp carry any weight. Thus foreign guarantors are being sucked into the equation.
The Army, the ultimate protector of the external and internal security fronts, has been caught in a dangerous bind. While it was hard pressed fighting the terrorists and their creeping coups, President Zardari has opened a much wider and a potentially suicidal confrontation which had brought the entire country to a standstill, even before the long march could start or converge at a point.

The Army is in no position to fight such a divisive and extended war with its own people, for the interests of a few misguided and incompetent leaders who failed to grow into the large shoes they landed in, by the stroke of luck after the ultimate sacrifice of Benazir Bhutto.

While leaders like Maulana Fazlur Rehman are, in sheer desperation, trying to give the phenomenal rising of the people for a national cause the colour of a possible threat to the federation, all those leading the movement have repeatedly said the objective of their struggle is to attain the objective of reinstatement of Nov 2 judiciary and not to dislodge the present PPP government.

Mian Nawaz Sharif, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Imran Khan and the lawyers’ leadership have said in one voice that the government must listen to what the nation demands. The Jamaat-e-Islami chief has even asked Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to use his pressure on the government to meet the public demand for the independence of judiciary instead of exploiting such a situation for a military intervention to grab power, a la Ziaul Haq or Musharraf.

Given the public mood and the thinking of the political leaders military intervention is not possible and would be strongly resisted if foolishly resorted to. Critical mistakes have been made by Zardari-controlled war room, set up in the bunker inside the presidency.

When Punjab was forcibly taken over by the governor to physically stop the long march and the entire transport system, official and private, was hijacked to block every road, two days before the D-Day word was sent out that the Shahbaz Sharif government was being restored in a few days.

Given our bureaucratic mindset, the entire Punjab administration was paralysed that very moment because no officer, junior or senior, would take action against an ousted chief minister or his party, if he was to regain power in a few days.

Hence there are numerous reports that the Punjab police and the administration was helping the Sharifs break the barriers or even smuggle them in police vehicles to dodge orders of a governor who was about to be sacked. It is simple logic.

A senior government official, who drove to Islamabad from Lahore hours before the long march started towards Islamabad, reported the mood of the civil administration and the police in Punjab had changed altogether. He said officials were no more inclined to block the long march because they themselves had felt the change in the wind.

He claimed if a police force of 23,000 and other security personnel deployed in Lahore could not prevent the Lahorites from coming out on the streets despite the use of brutal police force and teargas, the long march would smoothly move toward Islamabad as the other districts do not have enough force to face huge crowds.

According to a report, high-ranking police officers, of SSP rank and above, rushed inside the Lahore High Court and made speeches, apologising to the lawyers and the civil society. They said whatever had happened was wrong and from now on they won’t be a part of it. Rich traders of Lahore also come to the high court and categorically blamed it all on President Zardari. People were not chanting ‘Zardari ko jana hoga!’, rather they were saying, ‘Zardari to gaya!’

Asif Zardari has always been in a hurry to blow up the system that he suddenly inherited 14 months ago. He has overstretched his desire to become ‘General’ Asif Zardari, following in the footsteps of Gen Musharraf, for whom he still carries a soft spot.

Zardari began where Musharraf had peaked in terms of power. He had everything going for him, a supportive people, a unanimous parliament, a friendly opposition, a lovable media, a world ready to help. But he could not grasp the opportunity or even fathom the critical role he had been swept in. His destructive politics has led him to the present pass.
The last card he has, and he has been saying this in private for some time, is the ultimate “Sindh card” which had been used off and on by Sindhi leaders when they were in trouble or cornered because of their failed policies or strategies. Zardari using the Sindh card would be an ultimate joke with the people.

Why this appears a last ditch desperate effort is obvious as his cronies and loyalists like Rehman Malik and the foxy Maulana Fazlur Rehman have started raising this bogey. Malik has been referring to the “East Pakistan like” situation whereas nothing like it exists on the ground.
Even in Sindh all the nationalists led my Mumtaz Bhutto, GM Syed Group, Rasool Bux Paleejo, the nationalists of other provinces including the Bizenjos, Mengals, Marris of Balochistan and even the coalition partners Bilors of Peshawar have been looking at the situation as a fight for an independent judiciary and not a threat to the federation. Most have been very vocal in support of the judges.

Zardari does not realise that he has pushed himself to the wrong side of the political, civil and intellectual spectrum. While everyone is clamouring for judicial independence, and everyone includes top judges, lawyers, politicians, journalists, even generals and bureaucrats, using the Sindh card would be nothing but an act of desperation signalling acceptance of defeat.

The argument that the PPP was being victimised once again will hold no water as the present shape of the Zardari-led PPP is not what Benazir Bhutto’s PPP looked like and stood for. Benazir Bhutto’s jiyalas are no longer jiyalas of Zardari, they have been sidelined and it has been proved beyond doubt that Zardari does not stand for what Benazir wanted or struggled for.

Thus all the Sindhi PPP and non-PPP stalwarts, including even Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Nawab Yousuf Talpur, the Jatois, Bhuttos et al, will not let Zardari use the Sindh card. It is in fact no card at all.

  2. SNP protestors clash with police in Karachi. Geo files a contradicting story Written by Monitering Desk Sunday, 23 May 2010 14:09 [Courtesy Sindh Telegraph]

KARACHI: A clash took place between demonstrators and police on II Chandrigar Road and police arrested 10 protestors on Sunday.

Sindh National Party (SNP) took out a protest rally from press club against rising corruption but clogged into clash with police when rally reached II Chandrigar Road because police tried to stop the march of protestors. Protestors turned violent and subjected DSP of police to torture which incited police to fire shells of tear gas to disperse the demonstrators and fired in the air. The demonstrators began to flee but police could arrest at least 10 protestors and shifted them to unknown location. The leader of SNP Ameer Bhambhro said despite state torture they will continue their protest.

The Geo reports a contradicting story

The workers of little known Sindh National Party (SNP) have surrounded the offices of Geo and, Jang at the behest of government, Sunday. According to Geo, the provincial government has not taken any serious step to end the siege continuing for the last eight to 10 hours. Geo further reports that, they (SNP workers) barged into the Geo office and went on rampage. They also subjected a policeman to torture when he tried to stop the protestors from entering Geo office, Geo continues contradicting report. Police baton charged the protestors and tried to disperse them by using teargas. However, they staged a sit-in instead of leaving the office, Geo reported According to Geo, Chairman Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party (STPP) Qadir Magsi said it seems the group has the support of government. The Sindh Telegraph tried to contacted Dr. Magsi, late Sunday night to confirm his comment, but it could not reach him. It is not clear though, if Dr. Magsi’s statement was reported out of context.

  3. Jang Group/Express News VS Sindhi Community.

There is a difference between re-publishing the past history and running a propaganda campaign [Jang Group Alleges that Sindhi Nationalists in connivance with PPP has launched a Campaign against the incumbent CJSC’s past history] to make everyone aware as to what happened in the past, these reporters are least bothered to check that whatever is published on this blog is only the repetition of what has already been published in the same newspapers about The PCO Judges under Martial Law. There is a difference between news/investigative report/column and Table Stories/Personal Opinion rather hate mongering and several key supporters of Musharraf’s Military Regime/Military Establishment [for example Mr. Talat Hussain (Aaj TV/Expressnews), Mr. Shaheen Sehbai (Group Editor of The News International) and Mr. Ansar Abbasi (Editor Investigation The News International), Mr Kamran Khan, Mr Saleh Zaafir REFERENCE: Ansar Abbasi Praised Musharraf Martial Law, Article 6 & NAB Cases

KARACHI, March 10: One of the counsel for Nawaz Sharif in the plane conspiracy case, Iqbal Raad, and two others were gunned down by three unidentified people at his practice chambers on Friday afternoon. Shahzad Adil Khatri, son of the late Sindh High Court judge Adil Khatri, and an office peon were also killed with Iqbal Raad in his office in the multi-storey Paradise Chambers near the High Court building on Shahrah-i-Iraq. The peon, Ghulam Abbas, who hailed from Ranipur, had joined Iqbal Raad only three days ago. Iqbal Raad, from whose office a some unknown persons had stolen the fax machine and other equipment a fortnight ago, died of a kalashnikov burst while he was in his seat, and the bodies of Khatri and Ghulam Abbas lay just outside the internal door of Raad’s offices. Iqbal Raad, in his mid-50s, who has left behind his wife, three sons and one daughter, had been holding the post of advocate- general of Sindh until the Nawaz Sharif government was dismissed last year. Before being appointed AG, Mr Raad had showed interest in organizing the lawyers under the PML’s legal wing. According to witnesses, three men went up to the office of Mr Raad on the second floor, after alighting from an beige-coloured Alto car, and sprayed all the three with Kalashnikov and TT pistol shots. The witnesses said that soon after they had completed their operation, the killers climbed down the stairs and pulled up the car to flee the scene. KARACHI: Iqbal Raad, one of the counsel for deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the plane conspiracy case, was gunned down in his office at Saddar along with two others on Friday. The other two victims were identified as Shahzad Adil Khatri, son of Justice (retd) Hussain Adil Khatri, and Ghulam Abbas, an office boy of Iqbal Raad offices in Paradise Chambers, situated behind the Sindh High Court Building and near Passport Office. The killings took place at about 1:30 pm when former advocate general of Sindh Iqbal Raad had arrived in his chamber a little while ago. At that time, most of the area people had gone to Masjid-e-Khizra to offer Friday prayers. According to eyewitnesses, four commuters of a beige-coloured Alto car (ABZ-947) came outside Paradise Chambers, where Raad’s offices are located on the second floor. One remained in the driving seat with the vehicle’s engine start, while three others got off and entered the building. The gunmen stormed into the offices of Iqbal Raad and opened indiscriminate fire, killing Shahzad Adil Khatri, 23, and Ghulam Abbas, 18, in the front room. They then barged into Raad’s chamber where he was sitting on his revolving chair. The killers sprayed a volley of bullets, targeting the upper portion of his body. Iqbal Raad, the 53-year-old lawyer, sustained multiple bullets and died instantly. After completing their operation, the killers fled in the awaiting vehicle. An eyewitness, who saw the assailants rushing out of the building, told The News that two of them were wearing Shalwar Qameez and were armed with TT pistols in both hands, while the third gunman, who was wearing a shirt and trouser, was armed with a Kalashnikov rifle. Iqbal Raad received six bullets in the left of his upper thorax and hand. Five bullets pierced through his body while the sixth bullet was retrieved by a medico-legal officer from Raad’s shoulder blade. Eyewitnesses said that the prayers had concluded in the nearby Masjid-e-Khizra at the time of shooting. SP Aslam Soomro was also attending the prayers and his two police guards were standing outside the chambers of the slain lawyer. The bodies of the victims were shifted to the Civil Hospital for autopsies.
A large number of lawyers rushed to the hospital. Due to power failure at the Civil Hospital mortuary, the postmortem was conducted with a delay of about half an hour. “Raad’s collarbone was broken,” said an MLO, who conducted the postmortem. Peon Ghulam Abbas received a single bullet below his right ear and Shahzad sustained a bullet in his skull, he added. An advocate, on condition of anonymity, told The News that he had just taken his seat in his third floor office when he heard the gunshots. “I looked down from my window and saw three gunmen getting into a a beige-coloured Alto. I had seen that car parked right in front of the building’s gate with the driver in his seat. I also managed to see its registration number as ABZ-947,” he added. Another advocate, who shared Raad’s office on the same floor, told The News that he rushed to the scene on hearing the firing and saw the victims in a pool of blood. “I then telephoned the police on Emergency No 15. But they told me to inform the concern police station. Finally I called the Edhi Foundation’s volunteers,” he added. Shahzad Adil Khatri, who was also killed in the attack, had sold his offices to Raad a couple of months ago and was preparing for his CSS examinations in another office adjacent to that of Iqbal. Shahzad, eyewitnesses said, had come to Raad’s offices because his library was still there and he wanted to take some books. The young peon, Ghulam Abbas, was hired a couple of days ago. When contacted, a senior police official said that the car (ABZ-947), used in the incident, had a fake number plate. “It was a beige-coloured Alto car carrying the number allotted to Surrayia wife of Nazimuddin,” said one of the police investigators. When contacted, SSP South Iqbal Mehmood said: “We are still investigating that to whom the vehicle belongs.” Meanwhile, the acting police chief, SSP West Akhtar Gorchani, constituted a high-level team to probe the incident. The special team comprises SSP South Iqbal Mehmood, SSP CIA Manzoor Ahmed Mughal, SP City South Zaeem Iqbal Shaikh, SDPO Clifton Farooq Awan, DSP CIA Karachi Athar Rasheed Butt, DSP CIA Karachi Rasheed Shah, DSP CIA Ayub Gabol and SHO Artillery Maidan Naeem. 4. GEO TV/JANG GROUP’s Message of Hate for Pakistan.

Baluchistan is burning [ask those innocent Punjabis who have been living there since more than 60 years in Quetta and are being targeted for the mistakes of very few, they are leaving Baluchistan], NWFP is burning, Punjab is burning and GEO TV/JANG GROUP OF NEWSPAPERS have started a very dangerous and dirty game just to settle score with Zardari which will ultimately weaken Pakistan and Sindh will also burn. Criticizing Zardari for bad governance is one thing but exploiting National Assets to hound Zardari is treason and JANG GROUP AND GEO TV ARE INDULGED IN IT TO SETTLE PERSONAL SCORE – GEO TV: National Interest, Seymour M Hersh, Shaheen Sehbai & Dr Shahid Masood.

KARACHI – Sindh Minister for Information Department Shazia Marri has said that anti-democratic elements of media are busy to destabilise PPP-led elected government of the county. Addressing a Press conference at the Committee Room of Sindh Assembly she also condemned the thoughts expressed by an anchorperson Dr Shahid Masood on a private TV channel, in which he raised objections over Sindhi cap of President Asif Ali Zardari. She also blamed that Dr Shahid Masood through his views was trying to ignite the ethnic riots in the country, adding that the said anchorperson was harbouring some personal vendetta against the President Asif Ali Zardari. WASHINGTON: When an elected head of the state, who is also the head of the largest political party of the country, the Supreme Commander of the country’s armed forces and (at least on papers) the man with his finger on the country’s nuclear button, cannot venture out of his bunker in the presidency, a five-star prison of sorts, and attacks a TV channel, a newspaper editor or a talk show anchor, he must be seriously in trouble or scared to death with insecurity. It was a great day in my professional career to get so much attention on live TV, nationally and throughout the world, with the country’s president talking about me (why did you not name me) in a furiously threatening tone, foaming and frothing as if he would shoot me if I had been somewhere close to him at the time. I have just landed in Washington to spend a few days with my family on Eid ul Azha and the first thing I hear on TV is my head of state calling me names. It was a unique welcome to the festival of sacrifices.Zardari referred to me by frequently mentioning someone with “an American passport”. He also said I was not a Pakistani national. He has to get his facts right. But carrying an American passport is not something he would like to turn into a disqualification as bulk of his own cronies are exiles who have acquired foreign passports, including US passports, and they would be the ones to jump the ship first. I am a Pakistani and work in Pakistan and will continue to do so. REFERENCE: Have a heart, you are the president, Mr Zardari! By Shaheen Sehbai Thursday, November 26, 2009

Dr Shahid Masood [Jang Group/GEO TV] wants Ethnic Clash between Peaceful Pashtun/Urdu Speaking Citizens of Sindh, Dr Shahid Masood and Muhammad Saleh Zaafir [Jang Group] insult Sindhi Community and create more problems in an already disturbed Pakistan. How come Dr Shahid know that Pashtuns in Karachi are heavily armed??? Read the dangerous lines:

On Wednesday and Thursday when the Sindh interior minister almost declared full war on the MQM, revealing that all the closed criminal cases of the MQM were done fraudulently, the reality has now come to the surface. This is the final showdown the PPP is trying to start so that if President Zardari is disqualified, the Sindh Card, as it is generally known, could be played effectively. The problem with President Zardari and his cronies is that they don’t know how to defend their past corruption and how to convince their coalition partners and the relevant players in the establishment that they have changed their ways. This lack of defence is driving them into desperation and as officially announced by Zulfikar Mirza, the ultimate weapon they have is the Sindh Card to save themselves, or, if they fail, to take the entire system down if they fail. I am a proud Pakistani and also a proud Sindhi, but I don’t believe in the Sindh card. I am sure that such a card does not exist anymore. It is again wrong to suggest that father of the nation Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah used the Sindh card for creation of Pakistan. It is simply childish to say that adoption of resolution in favour of Pakistan in the Sindh Assembly in 40s was an exploitation of the Sindh card. It shows lack of sense of history. The passage of resolution by the Sindh Assembly establishes the negation of the Sindh card. The role of the Awami National Party is also crucial in this situation as its role in any clash between the PPP and the MQM in Karachi will be pivotal as thousands of Pathans, with arms, could play havoc. 5. Shaheen Sehbai, Jang Group & Sindh Card of Zardari

Mir Khalil ur Rehman [Founder of Jang Group of Newspapers] cannot forgiven for his and Jang Group’s dirty role played during the Sindhi Language Bill in 70s, Mumtaz Bhutto ignited the fire and Mir Khalil ur Rehman added fuel to the fire by lending Top Banner Heading to that rabid maniac Raees Amrohvi “Urdu Ka Janaza Hai Zara Dhoom Say Niklay” and this kind of sensationalism caused irreparable damage to the innocent people of Sindh.

Mir Khalil’s dirty role played havoc with the innocent lives of innocent bystanders [no matter to which Ethnic Group] and Mr Shaheen Sehbai, the Group Editor of The News International is doing the same by filing “Alleged News Analysis” on a Political Issue like NRO with ulterior motive to create another havoc. Shaheen has tried his level best to give Ethnic Colour to the issue which is Completely a Political/Legal Issue. Read his own words Shaheen is playing with fire which will ultimately result in Catastrophe.

It is almost certain, and a senior Sindhi politician who knows the PPP and Sindh like the back of his own right hand, openly admits, that for Zardari there would be no “Sindh Card”, as it was available to Benazir Bhutto. In fact when I asked the Sindhi politician what may happen in Sindh, and the heart of PPP country, if Zardari and his 12 friends were removed from their offices, the answer was: “Only these 13 people will protest, no one else will. ” He explained that there are no PPP cadres with fires in their belly left in the interior of Sindh who would rise for Zardari.

There is a growing sense of hatred because the Zardari clan has taken over all what was loved by the Bhutto jiyalas. “If today Nawaz Sharif stages a public meeting in Larkana, the country will be surprised at the turnout,” the mainstream Sindhi politician belonging to the PPP told me. The contours of a changed, unwritten script Situationer By Shaheen Sehbai Wednesday, November 04, 2009

The feeling in some PPP circles is that if the NRO strikes at Zardari and his cronies, rural Sindh, where the PPP has grass root support for the Bhuttos, would not react as fiercely as many predict it would. This may be so because Zardari and his Sindhi friends, who were never part of the Benazir circle, have generated enough ill will and animosity in the last 18 months.

He appears more sombre than before, is no more a chatterer as he used to be, admits mistakes unlike the past, rarely uses the expression “I” that has been the trait of his monologue, and above all sounds practical.

Meeting the president for two hours along with a group of journalists and columnists and dining together in the Presidential palace on Monday night turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It is not that the man sitting in the Presidency would change the destiny of Pakistan and bring prosperity and happiness in the lives of its people, but this meeting has helped me dispel some serious apprehensions that I had in my mind about Mr Asif Ali Zardari.

Though it was an off the record and a background discussion, President Zardari proved himself to be a disappointing source of information for the media. Despite being assured that he would not be quoted, he did not share any startling information. For news gatherers it was a boring occasion. But I have quite a few reasons to come out of the Presidency a satisfied man.

One comforting aspect of the meeting was that President Zardari desires to give every chance to the ongoing peace process in Swat and is not influenced by the internal and external pressures to rescind the agreement. On this particular issue, he is patient and has the realization that the military option would be the last resort because it would mean deaths and killings including those of innocents.

He wants to give Maulana Sufi Muhammad every chance to honour his words and is confident to persuade Washington during his forthcoming visit as to why the peace deal is so crucial and must be allowed to succeed.

My previous three interactions with Mr Asif Ali Zardari since Nov 4, 2007, one in Dubai at his residence to which he also referred in the Monday’s meeting and two in Islamabad after the Feb 18, 2008 elections, did not go so well as on almost each occasion we ended up in a verbal clash.

He used to be talkative to such a limit that he would not allow others to speak their mind. His philosophy, his reasoning and his arguments were not convincing, at times incomprehensible. He also used to sound arrogant, at times degrading others. But the Zardari I met and observed on Monday is an improved version of his past.

I am not sure whether he has been counseled for this or was acting like an experienced man but what we all saw was that now he listens to others too and does not sound arrogant as he used to be. He admitted that he had made mistakes and could have done better than what he and his government actually did. He did not contest to the general impression that there seems to be no government in Islamabad as the good governance remains a far cry. But he assures that things would improve and insists that the present situation is the outcome of a peculiar background.

During the recent months, I have been conveyed by quite a few that President Zardari does not like me because of my critical writings. I know that General Musharraf also had similar feelings for me. But the difference between the two is that one still opted to interact with me. Even otherwise a democratically elected ruler, irrespective of his reputation and personal conduct, is better than a dictator, who may or may not have a very good personal character and reputation.

Mr Zardari’s appointment as president after his repeated backtracking of promises and in view of his known reputation had caused a lot of concern amongst many. I was amongst those, who did not conceive his election positively and feared far more problems coming our way. I knew that President Zardari is not going to restore the Nov 2 judiciary and holds personal venom against Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. But he had to bow before the public pressure and restored him contrary to his personal will.

In case of General Musharraf when pressure was exerted on him, instead of respecting the voice of the people, he ruined the institution of judiciary on Nov 3, 2007. This is perhaps a perfect comparison between dictatorship and democracy and to prove why democracy, no matter how bad it is, is always better than dictatorship.

Later President Zardari also honoured Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s advice for the appointment of the top judges’ choice men as judges of the Supreme Court and as Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court.

The signing of Nizam-e-Adl Regulation by President Zardari is yet again another indication of the negation of his personal views for the sake of bringing peace in Swat. Now he is determined to protect the peace accord to all possible limits. But there are too many challenges the country is still facing for which President Zardari perhaps needs to change a lot more.

We the media would be there to encourage him for everything positive that he would do for Pakistan. He though feels that the media has been too critical of him during the last one year, the time would prove that he would get appreciation for every good thing that he would do but receive reprimand where he would go wrong only for the sake of Pakistan and for the people of Pakistan. It is wrong to expect from the media to be loyal to personalities or political entities. They have to be loyal to the interests of the state, its institutions and its people. REFERENCE: After setbacks, Zardari is an improved, chastised man By Ansar Abbasi Wednesday, April 29, 2009

ISLAMABAD: The collective wisdom of the country’s prime public representative body — the National Assembly of Pakistan — has put its weight behind the Swat peace deal to save the people of the valley from ruthless killing and complete lawlessness, which has been the hallmark of this once the enchanting tourist resort of Pakistan.

The parochial view of NGO types, liberal extremists and confused souls has been rejected by those, most of whom are known liberals, whether belonging to the Pakistan People’s Party, the Awami National Party and to some extent even the Pakistan Muslim League. They have definitely played their role of being public representatives and thus should be encouraged and praised. Going well beyond their personal philosophies, ideologies and political thinking, these members of the Parliament supported the peace deal, which in normal circumstances would not have been acceptable to most of them. Their priority was to secure the people of Swat from being pushed back to the pre-Feb 16 situation when innocent people were beheaded, butchered, looted, harassed and even flogged at the whims of a group of armed individuals.

The resolution adopted by the National Assembly was unanimous and voted by almost all the political parties. The only exception was the MQM, which too did not oppose it but opted to abstain. After the unanimously adopted resolution of the National Assembly there was no hurdle left for President Asif Ali Zardari to sign the Nizam-e-Adl Regulations, whose implementation is expected to bring peace in Swat.

This is no secret that the National Assembly has been involved in this issue only to tell the foreign powers particularly Washington, which has its reservations about the Swat peace deal, that the imposition of Islamic justice system is the will of the people of Pakistan. No doubt a smart move from President Zardari, who for a change has started taking decisions that surprise many. Only on Sunday, he approved the recommendations of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry for key appointments in the superior judiciary.

The president, who had given his consent to the peace deal before it was signed between the ANP government in Frontier province and Maulana Sufi Muhammad of Tehrik Nifaz Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM), wasted no time and sanctioned the Nizam-e-Adl Regulations.

The recent emergence of a suspected video of 17-year old girl’s flogging by Swat Taliban, had seriously threatened the peace process by adding up the internal as well as external pressure on the president not to sign these regulations. Internally, some of the political parties like the MQM and a number of NGOs and their representatives, and some known liberal extremists did a lot of drum beating on the issue of suspected video and used it to pressurise the government to cancel the peace deal with Maulana Sufi Muhammad.

What, however, remained incomprehensible that those opposed to the peace deal had no other option to bring normalcy in Swat, still they were insisting that Nizam-e-Adl Regulations must not be signed and that the federal government should not support the present peace process.

There is no answer from any such opposition of the Swat peace deal to the fundamental question then how to bring peace in Swat, save the innocents living there from being butchered, killed and looted, ensure that the girls’ schools there are not burnt and writ of the government is maintained.

Before Feb 16 there has been no writ of the government, the things were completely out of government’s control, the schools were being burnt and closed for girls, the policemen had deserted, security forces were helpless and it was really like a rule of jungle. During the last two months, things have changed dramatically and to the satisfaction of the people of Swat. The implementation of the Nizam-e-Adl Regulations, it is expected, would further improve the situation there and would enable the government to firm up its control in the area. 6. Shibli Naimani [Former Assistant of Deviant Sir Syed Ahmed Khan] in Al Farroq compiled many incidents based on false narrations. I have read History by Ibn Khaldun, Tabaqat Ibn Saad, Tabari, and Al Bidaya Wal Nihaya and haven’t found any such narrations.

Regarding Fiqh as per Hujjatul al Baligha by Shah Waliullah: For more than 2 centuries Muslims used to follow Quran and Sunnah directly without any Fiqh interpretation. Fiqh comes much later. Fiqh means understanding of Deen not Maslak like Fiqh Hanafi etc.etc.

GEO TV, Ansar Abbasi and Aamir Liaquat Hussain should be ashamed of themselves before quoting False Narration on Hazrat Omar [May Allah be pleased with him] – Ansar Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal and Aamir Liaquat have all committed Blasphemy by narrating a Lie and False Narration upon Hazrat Omar that he was [Allah forbid] was called by Qazi 10 times [where is the reference]. Shame of Jang Group who is not only indulged in Lies but Blasphemy and Tabbarra on Sahaba Kiram as well. Many of the narration regarding Hazrat Omar facing courts are false. ask for the reference from where they quote and then if it is Tabari then please ask about narrators. Shibli Naumani [Assistant of Deviant Hadith Rejector Sir Syed Ahmed Khan] when separated from Sir Syed, tried to cleanse his own [Shibli’s Name] name by writing Seerat-e-Nabawi [completed by Sulaiman Nadvi and it was also full of Mistake and riddled with Weak and Fabricated Reports] and same thing Shibli did with Al Farooq [riddled with Weak rather False Narrations]

Most of the Narrations quoted in Alleged Islamic History regarding Hazrat Omar [May Allah be pleased with him] regarding his [May Allah be pleased with him] appearance before Qazi are concocted rather False and outright Tabbarra of Worst Kind. These Columnists least bother to even check whether the narration is authentic or concocted. They are least bothered to recite Quran before quoting a lies which says..

Having worked on voice processing applications, audio codecs during my undergraduate studies, I can assert with total certainty that to date, no software is capable of flawlessly replicating an entire conversation. Any expert in the field of Digital Signal Processing, Voice Processing can attest to this fact.

The software pointed to by Mr Hamid Mir is simply a ‘text to speech converter’ ( ), used to generate automated voice response on telephone by reading an input text file word by word. Even this is not flawless and is easily discernible, since the software reads word to word and fails to reveal any emotion of the speaker, and we all know that Mr. Mir’s caught conversation is full of venomous emotions. Moreover, as far as I know, there is no software with the ability to convert urdu language text into a flawless natural conversation, like the one of Mr. Hamid Mir. Mr. Hamid Mir thinks that everyone around can be easily doped. In fact, instead of acknowledging his self-incriminating conversation he is only making a fool of himself by offering such senseless and lame arguments.

The software, called Natural Voices, is not flawless — its utterances still contain a few robotic tones and unnatural inflections……………….
scientists say the technology is not yet good enough to perpetrate fraud, could the synthesized voices eventually be capable of tricking people into thinking that they were getting phone calls or digital audio recordings from people they know? For now, technical limitations may temper any worries that a person’s voice could be lifted without permission. To build the software that recreates unique voices — which AT&T Labs is calling its ”custom voice” product — a person must first go to a studio where engineers record 10 to 40 hours of readings. Texts range from business news reports to nonsense babble.”

  10. The other day i watched a show on a television channel in which the

journalists from 5 media organizations were discussing this matter. It was interesting to see that they were all saying that a cautious attitude is required and one should not jump to conclusions in haste. I wonder if any tape like this was related to any politician about his/her wrong doing how hastily they would have drawn conclusions. Everyday, we watch them accusing government of wrong doings but they seldom wait to get their facts right. Before the 18th amendment was passed most of the anchors and columnists were convinced that Zardari won’t let it happen. To their dismay it happened.

I believe that most of them (media personnel) are supporting the army operation because their mentors in agencies wanted them to build the public opinion in their favor. And I’m afraid that change of mind by the military leadership will trigger them to convince their audiences that how pious they are, and that their purpose is to enforce sharia. The establishment has the real power in this country. And who else can dare to record this audio? May be Mir`s mentors wanted to teach him some lesson. It is interesting to see how struggle between different groups within agencies is revealing the truth.

  11. Intellectually Bankrupt: Shaheen Sehbai & Secret Cell in President House!

WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD: The main characters of the famous ‘Midnight Jackals’ operation of the late 1989 Benazir era have now returned to the TV screens and front pages of newspapers to speak about their adventures, blaming everybody else but themselves, and portraying themselves in their new role as great promoters of truth and honesty. Exactly 20 years later, again in a PPP-Zardari era, why and what these characters are doing have turned out to be the greatest political mystery with major political parties and leaders sucked into the storm blaming each other for unleashing these hounds. The multi-million dollar question ‘who is behind this latest sky dive into the past’ remains unanswered. An investigation by The News revealing scattered links and connecting the dots may lead to formation of a composite picture of the people behind this great diversion from the burning issues of the day.

Days after his meetings at the Nadra, an important journalist of the official news agency APP started calling TV anchors and media persons on behalf of Brig Imtiaz and each time he handed over the phone to the brigadier who wanted himself on the screens. Many anchors have gone on record to say the brigadier was too eager and ready to spills the beans. One anchor wrote that the brigadier said he wanted to explode a “political nuclear bomb”. That he was going to spill the beans against his own self was irrelevant and unimportant but this time he was trying to compensate the PPP for ‘Midnight Jackals’ against Benazir Bhutto. The other members of the team would call up every friend and ìinterestedî media person to highlight the revelations of Brig Imtiaz and for days and weeks nothing else should be discussed on the media. They were quite successful in achieving that goal, while the presidency would keep on denying that any cell existed in that house on the hill. Factually the cell was not in the presidency. When Kaira was asked about any cell in the presidency working for this blame game and maligning the politicians, he said that he himself (Kaira) was the biggest cell. Soon they had the names of 12 other officers at Kahuta and other places who were part of this plan to sabotage the nuclear sites. According to the plot, these nuclear scientists and engineers working on the payroll of a secret agency, were to develop huge technical sabotage of the programme to an extent that it could not have been repaired or fixed for some years to come. They all were arrested from various places in the light of information given by Brig Imtiaz. It was revealed that actually the foreign secret agency had deputed five handlers from Washington to deal with the nuclear programme of Pakistan. These five foreign handlers included two girls, one of whose photos was seen by the heartbroken girlfriend of Munshi which made her jealous and she decided to take revenge. Brig Imtiaz was immediately called to Islamabad to give a briefing to General Ziaul Haq The five handlers were immediately told to leave Pakistan and General Zia was said to have called the president of this superpower to register a protest that how his country’s secret agency had tried to sabotage Pakistan’s nuclear programme. Zia was said to have expressed extreme displeasure over this espionage of nuclear programme. But, the president of that superpower was said to have requested Zia not to make it a public issue as it might tarnish his country’s image and Zia obliged him. A special tribunal was set up to try all those Pakistani scientists and engineers on high treasons charges. The ringleader Munshi was sentenced to death while others were awarded life sentences by the court. But one fine morning, much to his shock, Brig Imtiaz learned that President Zia had commuted the death penalty of Munshi on the recommendation of a top Sindhi leader in exchange for his political support to the Zia regime. 17. Notice served on former PTV chief Shahid Masood By Khawar Ghumman Wednesday, 02 Jun, 2010

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Television Corporation has served legal notice on its former chief Dr Shahid Masood for recovery of Rs5.1 million which he had to pay as per his contract before leaving the organisation.

Acting Secretary Information and Broadcasting Mansoor Sohail informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday that on May 27 the PTVC had sent the legal notice to the former PTV managing director, who also held the additional charge of its chairmanship for some time. The issue came before the PAC when it was scrutinising the ministry’s audit report for the year 2008-09.

The cabinet secretariat vide its notification dated June 21, 2008, appointed Dr Shahid Masood as managing director of PTVC with the additional charge of chairmanship. He assumed the charge on the same date. As per appointment letter dated June 27, 2008, his contract period was five years and in case of early termination of the contract a notice of six months was required from either side or gross salary in lieu thereof. The gross salary of the officer was fixed at Rs850,000 per month.

Dr Masood tendered resignation which was accepted by the prime minister with effect from November 3, 2008. The officer did not serve the notice of six months and, therefore, was liable to pay the gross salary amounting to Rs5.1 million in lieu of the notice period. The irregularity was reported to the management on April 2, 2009, and to the ministry on June 1, 2009.

PAC Chairman Chaudhry Nisar Ali said when it came to public money no favour should be done to anybody; therefore, the committee backed PTVC’s decision to serve legal notice on Dr Masood.

Commenting on the overall working of the information ministry, the PAC chairman said the ministry was keeping its various operations secret which over the years had cast shadow over its affairs. Accepting that the ministry during PML-N’s two terms in power also remained involved in such activities, Mr Nisar called for a serious re-examining of its working. “Until this day, I am unable to understand why the ministry keeps a secret fund,” he said, warning that next time the PAC would like to know each and every penny spent by the ministry.

PTV FOUNDATION: The PAC directed the secretary information, who is also chairman of the PTV, to wind up its foundation whose affairs over the years had gone from bad to worse.

Mr Sohail informed the committee that since taking over the charge of the ministry, he had a couple of meetings with the foundation’s board of directors and found it was not a viable option. In response, the PAC chairman said the committee also recommended the same and was willing to extend help to the PTV administration.

The PTV board of directors in its meeting held on August 28, 2001, had approved incorporation of the PTV foundation. As per its charter, the foundation was established to carry on the business of advertising, publishing, film making, drama production to establish, operate studios, theatres and other institutions for the promotion of science, art and culture. So far the foundation has consumed Rs30 million loaned money but failed to start even a single project.
