Daily Jang Terms Ilyas Kashmiri ‘Patriot’

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

The News (Jang Group)An article in Daily Jang provide an interesting look at how Jang Group characterises jihadis in Urdu publications. The articles describe the jihadi leader Ilyas Kashmiri who is believed to have been killed recently in a drone strike.

You will please recall that a sympathetic piece was published in Daily Jang following the death of Osama bin Laden.

Now let us look at another profile in the same newspaper. Abid Shah interviews Ilyas Kashmiri’s brother for an article titled, lyas Kashmiri Tahaffuz-e-Pakistan aur Azadi-e-Kashmir kay liye masroof raha, bhai Chaudhry Asghar.

Ilyas Kashmiri profile of Daily Jang

According to Jang Group reporter Mazhar Tufail “there are clear signs of the involvement of Ilyas Kashmiri group in the terrorism incident at the naval base, PNS Mehran” as well as GHQ. The reporter wrote that “Ilyas Kashmiri group has been playing an important role in planning attacks on Pakistan’s defence system and institutions”. In Jang Group‘s English newspaper, Hamid Mir terms Ilyas Kashmiri as “one of the most dangerous threats for the security of not only Pakistan but the whole of South Asia”.

So why then does Jang Group follow these reports by going to Kashmiri’s village to ask his family for their opinion? What could the editors expect except for a sympathetic report?

The question must be asked why is Jang Group projecting militants who attack the nation’s defence as pro-Pakistan? As the nation continues to suffer terrorist attacks, a major media group is characterising a jihadi leader as “patriot of the highest degree”.

One possibility is that Jang Group is projecting extremism and anti-Americanism as a cynical strategy to sell newspapers. According to a recently revealed Wikileaks document, this has been an admitted scheme of Jang Group employees.

12. The problem of reporting rumor, innuendo, and unsubstantiated allegations is bad enough when limited to the distribution numbers of “Jang” daily or “The News.” However, it is when these stories are amplified by the “GEO TV Network” that the truly negative influence expands to substantial numbers. And all of this by their own admission is calculated to maintain or increase their market share.

13. On a recent visit to “GEO TV Network” offices in Karachi, our IO had a conversation putting all of this into context. “GEO” sees its behavior as win-win with sensationalism and hate speech generating ratings and any attempt by authorities to rein it in allowing them to exploit their circumstance by claiming censorship.;

The question must be asked, is Jang Group publishing these articles out of ideological sympathy for terrorists, or are they projecting extremism and hate speech as a scheme make money? The people have the right to know.

Is Jang Group telling the truth about Geo Super?

Geo Super Cross Out

Additional evidence has surfaced supporting the belief that Jang Group is playing politics with Geo Super. As you will recall, Jang Group has claimed that transmission of the sports channel was shut down by the government. This claim was first called into question by the blog Cafe Pyala.

Almost everyone would have seen this image where Geo Super used to be. Does this mean PEMRA has pulled Geo Super off air? That’s what the Jang Group would have you believe. But think about something: if the channel were actually blocked, why would you be able to see this image? Remember when Geo and other news channels were pulled off air during the 2007 ‘Emergency’? The screens actually went blank. In fact, what this constant image indicates is that Geo Super is still broadcasting and being distributed on cable and satellite dishes. It is just that the channel itself is not running any programming.

Following additional research, Pakistan Media Watch found evidence that actually Jang Group had stopped broadcasting programming themselves in order to extort a domestic uplink license from the government without following proper procedures.

The story that is unfolding appears to expose a disturbing possibility – that a media group, confident in its ability to sway public opinion, is attempting to pressurise government agencies and the courts to grant it special privileges. Such a scheme would not be necessary to ensure programming reaches the people, rather it would be a direct assault on the authority of the government and the courts and a power grab by media owners.

Just as the government should not interfere with media, media should not attempt to interfere with government also. This story should be watched closely as it appears there could be more to what is going on than is being truthfully reported.

Thanks to the documents revealed by Wikileaks, additional evidence has surfaced which suggests that Jang Group intentionally stops programming in order to gain sympathy from the public and pressurise the government.

wikileaksOn November 17, 2008, “GEO TV” suddenly disappeared from the  airwaves in Karachi.  The blackout lasted about six hours.  A senior “GEO” staffer told our senior information LES that the stoppage was  a result of pressure being applied by one of the political parties  due to “GEO” not airing a speech by one of its politicians.  Post  found out subsequently that another “GEO” official disclosed to an  officer of a European diplomatic mission that they had taken  themselves off the air in order to blame the political party, and  garner support for the station.

As the judiciary determines whether or not PEMRA has not moved forward with the request for a license for Geo Super in order to pressurise Jang Group, perhaps it would also be worth determining whether or not Jang Group has been involved in a pattern of actions intended to deceive the public and pressurise the government also. In no case do two wrongs make it right, and neither PEMRA nor Jang Group should use their resources to pressurise the other. Rather media and regulators both should operate in a fair and transparent matter.

Hamid Mir’s Latest Source Admits Making Whole Thing Up

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

On Wednesday’s Capital Talk, Hamid Mir showed an interview with an unnamed source who claimed to have first-hand knowledge of infiltrators who helped militants attacks PNS Mehran last month. You can see the clip below starting at the 6-minute mark.

The source, speaking through his tears, makes wild claims about not only infiltrators in the military but plans to attack an American airline also. His claims don’t make any sense, but rather than ask questions that might help determine if he is telling the truth, Hamid Mir suggests how the source might change his story to make it more believable. He actually helps his source invent his story while he’s speaking!

When the show cuts back, Hamid Mir pleads for protection for the young man implying that as thin as his sources story is, we should believe it.

Actually, we shouldn’t believe it. In less than two days, the source appeared on Waqt TV saying he made the whole thing up to get revenge over a love dispute.

Hamid Mir Source Muhammad Junaid

The man who made sensational claims about the PNS Mehran base attack has turned out to be a disparate lover who fabricated the story just to revenge his failure in marrying a sister of an army man. Muhammad Junaid in an interview with Waqt News confessed that he had nothing to do with the Karachi naval base attack. “I am not a witness to it and totally unaware of the facts about it,” he said.

This is a classic example of unprofessionalism and poor reporting. Rather than investigate and ask tough questions to get to the bottom of the story, Hamid Mir appears to help the young man with his lies. Despite the fact that the man presented no evidence, Hamid Mir accepts his story without question and broadcasts the interview on television even requesting security for the man.

Muhammad Junaid claims that he made the whole thing up to get revenge in a love dispute. What is Hamid Mir’s excuse?

Media Adds Bodies, Confusion To Drone Death Count

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Since Geo took a report from AFP and added two bodies to the death count from a pair of drone strikes in North Waziristan on Monday, news agencies have been in a race to the top of the pile of bodies.

The News and Jang added an extra body, making the total 10 deaths.

Express Tribune added another two bodies, bringing the total death count to 12.

Daily Express and Nawa-i-Waqt each raised the body count to 15.

Each article appears to have the death count confirmed by ‘security officials’, but contains different numbers – even news outlets that are part of the same media group. Geo has different numbers than Jang and Express Tribune has different numbers than Daily Express. Which report is correct? We do not know. What we do know is that this is another example of poor reporting and editing which serves only to confuse the public on grave issues facing the nation.

Geo Caught Plagiarising, Censoring Report On Drones

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

The News (Jang Group)Editors and journalists may think they can get away with plagiarizing articles and changing the facts reported without being caught. But in the modern age of the internet this is simply not possible. Most recently Geo has found itself embarrassed on the world stage when US think tank ‘AfPak Channel’ caught it plagiarizing an article from AFP and changing the facts without any explanation.

On Monday, international news agency AFP reported that ‘US drone attacks kill seven in Pakistan’. Later that same day, Geo reported that US drone attacks kill nine in NWA. The articles are nearly identical.

In fact, the only difference between the two articles is that Geo removed paragraphs from the original story that note the body count from the attack. The original AFP article contains the following paragraphs:

“At least seven militants were killed in both the US drone strikes. The vehicle was completely burnt and the compound was also destroyed,” a security official in Miranshah told AFP.

A second security official in Peshawar confirmed both the drone strikes and the casualties.

“We don’t know their exact identities but we were informed that there were foreigners inside that compound,” one intelligence official told AFP.

The US strikes doubled last year, with more than 100 drone strikes killing over 670 people, according to an AFP tally, and the CIA has said the covert programme has severely disrupted Al-Qaeda’s leadership.

The raid also rocked Pakistan’s seemingly powerful security establishment, with its intelligence services and military widely accused of incompetence or complicity over the presence of bin Laden close to a military academy.

As you can see, each of the paragraphs Geo removed from the original article contain either mentions of the news agency that originally published the report, AFP as well as paragraphs that mention the death count and references that might be considered as critical to the establishment.

The action by Geo was noticed and reported as “strange” by US think tank AfPak Channel on their Twitter account.

How strange that Geo http://ow.ly/4VOcS took this AFP story http://ow.ly/4VOf2 and just changed 7 to 9, without attribution

US media groups were rightly criticised heavily for covering up the identity of CIA contractor Raymond Davis earlier this year. If Geo is also found to be removing paragraphs from reports that could be seen as critical of the military and intelligence agencies here as well as changing facts such as death counts and plagiarizing reports from other news agencies, it must be asked whether other reports from Geo have been censored, changed, and plagiarized.

Geo has been on the front lines of calls to protect and defend the freedom of media. But if Geo is censoring and editing reports to protect the establishment from criticism, it must be asked how free their media really is.

Crazy Talk Hamid Mir Aur Ansar Abbasi Kay Saath

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Hamid Mir hosts 'Crazy Talk'

On Crazy Talk last night, Hamid Mir and Ansar Abbasi put on an incredible show. And by ‘incredible’ I mean, of course, without a shred of credibility. Also, though, I mean incredibly funny.

Earlier in the day, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif issued a statement on the raid in Abbottabad. According to Hamid Mir, Nawaz’s speech revealed groundbreaking stuff that you would not believe. According to Hamid Mir this incredible groundbreaking stuff was that drones are being flown from within Pakistan. As if this is somehow news. According to Hamid Mir, though, this is proof that government itself is responsible for all the deaths that Gilani mentioned in his own speech.

What’s missing from this groundbreaking news? Any mention of Army or ISI. It is as if Nawaz claimed that drones are being flown from PM House in Islamabad and not an Army base in Jacobabad. But Pakistan has an Army. Pakistan has intelligence agencies. So why does Hamid Mir tells his audience that Nawaz Sharif has put this responsibility for drones on the civilian government?

Of course, Hamid Mir did notice Nawaz’s statements critical of the military later in the show. But rather than criticise Mian Nawaz, Hamid Mir also says “Kuch logon ka ye bhi khayal hai ke “ Nawaz Shareef nay darasal haqeeqat mei wohi batain kari hain jo ke saddar Zardari Sahab Chahtay thay kyonkay wo bhi ander say yehi chahty hain ke fauji qayadat kay khilaf inquiry commision ki baat ho”. (Some people also think that in actuality, these statements reflect what President Zardari wanted because from inside, he also wants talks about inquiry commission against the army leadership) . This incredible fact became even more incredible when Ansar Abbasi stated that he also hears the same voices in Hamid Mir’s head and confirmed Hamid Sahib’s statement that there is a secret faction of Zardari cronies in Islamabad who are cursing the military and trying to weaken Pakistan’s security services.

First of all Mr. Hamid Mir, can you please explain who these “kuch log” (some people) are? I mean I would really like to find out who said this because I know that you didn’t just make these people up, right? Secondly, are you saying that these critical statements were put into the speech by people in the government? Of course, this makes perfect sense now. I’m sure the government’s media advisers worked furiously to finish the opposition leader’s speech in time for his press conference.

In the mind of Hamid Mir, everything Nawaz Sharif said about Pakistan cooperating with drones is evidence against the civilian government, not the military. And anything that could possibly be considered as critical of the military is evidence against the civilian government also because they hypnotized Nawaz and made him say these things. These mind control magicians are, of course, “close to Zardari”. Again, this makes perfect sense. Asif Zardari is always using his mind control magicians to convince the media to say such sweet things about him!

Ansar Abbasi then offers his own helpful advice: Any inquiry should be independent, but should also avoid giving any points to our enemies. And who are Pakistan’s enemies? According to Ansar Abbasi, number one enemy is America and number two enemy is India. No mention of the people who have killed tens of thousands of Pakistanis with bomb attacks. In some ways, this makes sense. There are plenty of awami lives to spare, but very few general’s egos.

Ansar Abbasi continues to say that there are people in foreign capitals who tell him and his colleagues to write against the Army and ISI to push the agenda of Washington. This is when Hamid Mir cuts him off and says “Aur gandi galiyan deitay hian- Gandi galiyan deitay hian! Asif Zardari kay qareebi saathi fauji leadership ko gandi galiyan deitay hain leikin public kay samnay kuch aur kehtay hain” (And they use abusive language! They use abusive language! Asif Zardari’s close aides use abusive language for Army leadership but say something else in front of the public). Really? So are you saying Mr. Hamid Mir that you are such good friends with Zardari and his inner circle that you know what they say when they’re not in front of public? And you can see that with such authority because you hang out with them and chill on weekends discussing all of this over chai biscuits and samosas?

And finally, when one of the guests Haider Abbas Rizvi mentions that when 9/11, London bombings and Madrid bombings happened, no body asked for resignations of their intelligence heads, Hamid Mir cut him off and mentioned that there is a difference that in 9/11 terrorists entered US and that helicopters from another country did not enter airspace. Even though he later admitted that there was a security breach, my question for Hamid Mir is: Are organizations such as Al-Qaeda, Afghan Taliban, or the Haqqani network and their allies not working diligently to kill innocent civilians? Have they not claimed the lives of more than 30,000 Pakistanis? Are they not in our country uninvited? The answer to all these questions is yes, but then why is Hamid Mir so hesitant on calling these terrorists organisations out for what they really are? Why is Hamid Mir forgetting that a bigger breach of sovereignty was carried out by these terrorists plaguing our nation?

At the end of the episode, I felt exhausted. Partly I was tired from laughing and partly it was from the mental gymnastics that were required to bend logic into such contortions necessary to understand what Hamid Mir and Ansar Abbasi were trying to say. One thing is certain, whether or not Nawaz gets his enquiry, no one will be any wiser for listening to this type of Crazy Talk.

Sympathy for the Devil

Hamid Mir with Osama bin Laden

In 2001, Osama bin Laden, by his own admission, masterminded the 9/11 attacks which killed 3,000 innocent people including dozens of innocent Muslims. This was not the first mass murder of innocents masterminded by bin Laden, nor would it be the last. His plan to draw the Americans into a protracted war like they did the Soviets in the 1980s has resulted in the deaths of countless innocent people. Early Monday morning the American President Barack Obama announced from the White House that this mastermind of death was killed in a hideout in Abbottabad.

The top editorial in Dawn describes Osama bin Laden’s path of destruction quite well.

HE is dead, and his demise marks the end of an era. America has finally killed the man whose pursuit had consumed the country for almost a decade, an extremist who inspired even more violence than he himself perpetuated. In many ways 9/11, Osama bin Laden`s signature attack, has come to define the last 10 years. It has shaped US foreign policy to a greater degree than any other development of the decade and led to two major wars, one of which continues today. It has resulted in gross violations of human rights in the name of the `war on terror`. It has transformed Pakistan and Afghanistan, dragging them into ideological divides and violence. The latter has claimed many more thousands of lives than were lost on 9/11. All of this can be traced, directly or through those inspired by him, to Osama bin Laden, a former jihadi fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan who later decided that American interference in the Muslim world justified indiscriminate violence against the US and those Muslim nations cooperating with it.

But a different portrait of this man is being painted in other parts of the media. Top personalities at media giant Jang Group are channeling jihadi talking points and painting a picture of bin Laden as a martyr who died fighting against terrorism.

Writing in The News, Ansar Abbasi writes

If Osama was considered a terrorist by the Pakistani government just because of being convinced by Washington’s propaganda, then why was not he apprehended by our own forces? He should have been tried and sentenced here if he was doing anything in violation of the law of the land.

Osama was branded a terrorist by the US after his alleged involvement in the 9/11 attack, which resulted in the killing of a few thousand innocent Americans. So, the principle is that those who kill innocents are terrorists. Therefore, if Osama was a terrorist for his alleged involvement in the 9/11 episode, then following the same principle why the US, which is responsible for killing more than a million innocent Muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan, is not termed a terrorist state?

Despite the statements taking credit for 9/11 by Osama bin Laden himself, Ansar Abbasi uses terms like “alleged involvement” and “Washington’s propaganda” to suggest that bin Laden was falsely accused. This should not come as a surprise, though, as the same Ansar Abbasi on Capital Talk said,

“Aik toh pehli baat mei yeh kahoonga , Amreeka jisko terrorist kehti hia mei usko terrorist nahi manta. Agar terrorist maasoomon ko marnay
ka principle hai toh sab say ye pichli aik century mei sab say zyada masoomon ko amreeka nay mara hai”

(“Whoever America calls a terrorist, I do not call them one. If killing innocents is a trait by terrorists then in the last whole century the maximum number of innocents killed was by America.”)

Additional praise and sympathy for Osama bin Laden came from Hamid Mir who wrote a long eulogy for The Osama bin Laden I knew.

I was lucky to meet him for the third time on the morning of November 8, 2001. I was the first and the last journalist to interview him after 9/11. Intense bombing was going on inside and outside the city of Kabul. He welcomed me with a smile on his face and said: “I told you last time that the enemy can kill me but they cannot capture me alive, I am still alive”. After the interview, he again said: “Mark my words, Hamid Mir, they can kill me anytime but they cannot capture me alive; they can claim victory only if they get me alive but if they will just capture my dead body, it will be a defeat, the war against Americans will not be over even after my death, I will fight till the last bullet in my gun, martyrdom is my biggest dream and my martyrdom will create more Osama bin Ladens”.

Osama fulfilled his promise. He never surrendered.

While describing Osama bin Laden as a hero, Hamid Mir repeatedly terms the US as “the enemy”.

According to my knowledge, he escaped death at least four times after 9/11.At times, he dodged the world’s most sophisticated satellite systems and dangerous missiles by his own cleverness, and at others, it was his sheer luck that saved him from enemy strikes with only minutes to spare.

Osama bin Laden wanted to fight on the frontline, but his colleagues stopped him. Heated arguments were exchanged. Bin Laden was angry, but Abu Hamza Al Jazeeri convinced him to escape. They placed many rockets with timers, aimed at two different directions, as a deception. They decided to break the enemy encirclement, heading in the third direction with a group of foot fighters.

The al-Qaeda sources claimed that he does not believe in suicide, it is easier for him to sacrifice his life in the battle against the enemy till the last bullet and the last drop of his blood.

These description of Osama, a foreign terrorist (despite what his defenders at Jang Group are saying), stands in stark contrast to the media treatment of the treatment of another death earlier this year when a Pakistani man known for his tolerance and defense of innocents. I am of course referring to Salmaan Taseer.

Recent surveys have decisively shown that Osama bin Laden was discredited and largely disliked across the world and especially in Pakistan. Therefore the question must be asked: If support for bin Laden has fallen to below 18 per cent, who are these journalists speaking for? It’s clearly not Pakistan.

Who has shut down Geo Super?

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

If you have not already, please immediately read Cafe Pyala’s brilliant explanation of the PEMRA vs GEO case that unfortunately continues to waste the time and energy of many people. Of the most damaging revalations from this expose is the question who is actually banning Geo Super?

Geo Super Cross OutGeo/Jang Group has consistently accused the government via PEMRA of blocking transmission of Geo Super as a method of retaliation for Jang Group’s constant attacks on the government. But as blogger CPM points out, Geo Super has not been taken off the air, it has simply stopped airing programming. This is why we are subjected to a screen with Jang Group’s new advertisement that shows a red cross over the Geo Super logo. As CPM correctly notes, in order for this to appear on the screen, it must be broadcast. This is clearly not something that the government would be broadcasting, so who is it? It appears to be Geo Super.

Actually, PEMRA has issed show cause notice due to Geo Super’s suspending its own transmission.

Another show cause notice was issued by PEMRA to Geo Super for suspending its satellite transmission since April 5 in contravention to Section 28 of PEMRA Ordinance 2002 and clause 24.1 (c) of the licence terms and conditions which prohibits any broadcast media or distribution service operator from ceasing or suspending broadcasting.

Therefore the question must be asked, if Geo Super has suspended its own programming – not PEMRA –  then why is it telling people that the government has ordered it to stop transmission?

Geo website claims government ordered to stop transmission

As Cafe Pyala points out, Geo has begun “a campaign to get the citizens of Pakistan to grant them a “public license” to resume broadcast (whatever that may be)”. In fact, this is where the answer may lie.

While it is not clear what Geo means by “public license” – a term they may have invented – the petition features an interesting bit of ‘small print’ next to the demand.

Geo's real goal to broadcast from Pakistan?

If you cannot read the screengrab, the petition says in large letters:

As a Pakistani citizen, sports lover and in national interest I hereby give license* to GEO SUPER to broadcast my country’s first and only sports channel from Pakistan.

Notice the star? If you look below, in smaller letters, it says this:

*I also request the regulator and courts to enable GEO SUPER to broadcast from Pakistan

Ahhhhhh!!!!

As Cafe Pyala correctly mentions, Geo Super is registered in Dubai, and therefore broadcasts via international uplink. This is confirmed by the APP article explaining (a bit late) PEMRA’s position.

In this regard, it is clarified that Geo Super is up-linking its transmission from Dubai and is authorised to market and distribute only in Pakistan though a local company i.e. ‘M/s Birds Pvt Ltd’. The channel management has suspended its transmission at its own since April 5, and has launched a baseless media campaign against the regulator alleging for banning its transmission which is factually incorrect.

Geo Super continues to broadcast, only it has suspended the transmission of usual programming and replaced it with a crossed out Geo Super logo and begun a campaign that appears to demand fair treatment for Geo, but is actually asking the public to force the regulators and courts to gran Geo a domestic uplink.

Is this all a game by Jang Group/Geo to blackmail the government into providing it a license to uplink domestically without following proper protocols and regulations? Geo supporters claim that the government has banned Geo Super transmission to hurt Jang Group financially as revenge for critical reporting. But it has been shown that the government has not banned Geo Super transmission, therefore this explanation cannot be true.

PEMRA Controversy

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

PEMRAThe News today leads with a troubling story about a PEMRA executive instructing an employee to play games with the broadcast of cricket World Cup on Geo Super. The whistleblowing employee, Regional General Manager of Pemra in Balochistan Gul Muhammad Kakar, provided a document that describes his claim. This case should be investigated to ensure that PEMRA is operating in an objective and fair manner and not targeting any particular media group.

Jang Group which is the owner of Geo is understandably upset, but cries of nefarious plots hatched in the top echelons of power and conspiracies par excellence are premature. Jang Group’s claim that “it has become clear that the government is bent upon bulldozing its way, breaking all laws, trampling upon the rights guaranteed by the highest of courts and the constitution of the country” is an overstatement of the facts as are presently known. Such sensationalism and hyperbole threaten to undermine the cause of objective review of the facts that is required by the course of justice. Certainly there should be “an open and rapid accountability” of anyone involved in attempting to suppress media. But accountability require objective inquiry and not media trials with pre-determined conclusions.

This is a serious accusation that had been made, and it is imperative that the authority of PEMRA not be tarnished by the inappropriate actions of any PEMRA officer. Accordingly, there should be an investigation into the claims of Gul Muhammad Kakar and if any PEMRA officer has acted outside the boundaries of professionalism, he should be sacked immediately. However, the investigation should not be turned into a ‘witch hunt’ and used to score political points and settle personal rivalries. Jang Group needs to let the law take its course and, while defending its own rights, not respond in an extreme manner that undermines its own cause.

Matiullah Jan Holds Colleagues Accountable, Exposes Corruption In Media

Monday, February 28th, 2011

We have posted several times over the years that the solution to irresponsibility and unethical behaviour in media lies not with any government interference, but within media itself. Better training, better oversight by editors and industry associations, hiring of ombudsmen, and the type of self-policing that is exemplified by Matiullah Jan’s show Apna Gareebaan on Dawn TV.

On the latest episode Matiullah Jan exposes the corruption within the ranks of media from those who took advantage of government funded Hajj Facility.
