The News “Journalistic Garbage” About Zardari’s Trip

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

The News (Jang Group)Just days after a court terms Jang Group’s prized reporter Ansar Abbasi’s sourcers “incorrigible liars”, The News (Jang Group) has outdone itself in the field of anonymours rumours and baseless speculations. An article from the 14 January edition featured the sensational headline, “Zardari to seek Karzai-like US security?” and was so completely devoid of facts that it even lacked a proper by line.

The article begins by claiming that “Asif Zardari is mulling over asking his US interlocutors to provide him American security”. This claims is attributed to “reports”, the author apparently unable to even convince one of Abbasi’s “incorrigible liars” to say such a thing. In fact, five paragraphs of this story describe attempted attacks on Hamid Karzai and having nothing to do with President Zardari at all. It appears that The News is simply filling column space with irrelevant facts to make up for the lack of substance in the story.

Most peculiar about the article, though, was the following paragraph:

It is understood that Asif Zardari has developed some fear from unidentifiable direction about himself while staying in the federal capital or places of high altitude and mountain terrain. Incidentally he has gone to Washington that is again a place with high altitude and situated on a mountain. For the reason he has opted to travel to New York and from there he plans to proceed to Washington by road. He would not be having overnight stay in Washington and could return to New York for the journey back home.

It is “understood” that Zardari has developed some fears? Who has made this claim and on what evidence? Again, no facts, no sources…nothing but anonymous rumours and baseless speculation.

Also, Washington is not situated on a mountain. According to Wikipedia, the highest point in the District of Columbia is 410 feet (125 m) above sea level. Not only doesn’t Washington have mountains, actually it has three rivers: Potomac, Anacostia, and Rock Creek.  Some areas of Washington DC were even part of the riverbed that have been filled to create land.

Finally, it has been confirmed by the diplomatic mission in Washington that President Zardari arrived by Emirates flight in New York City. From there he flew to Washington DC where he stayed two nights before returning.

All it took to disprove this fake story was a simple request for confirmation of the President’s public schedule and a Google search. The question must be asked again: Why The News (Jang Group) continues to publish stories filled with factual inaccuracies, anonymous rumours, baseless speculation, no verifiable sources, and not even a reporter willing to sign his name to the story?

It is fitting that President Zardari was visiting Washington DC to attend a memorial for the American diplomat Richard Holbrooke who once termed such stories as “journalistic garbage”.

So Much For Myth of US and Army-Backed Caretaker Government

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Since the day one of the present government, certain media personalities have been predicting a coup of some form or another. Whether because of personal grudges, political opposition, or simply an attempt to be controversial there have been countless stories or examples of Wishful Journalism saying that the government will soon fall to a US-backed military caretaker government.

If anyone actually believed this myth, though, it’s over now.

Now US Special Envoy Richard Holbrooke has stated quite clearly that the Americans will only support a democratically elected government in Pakistan.

Mr Holbrooke, who is in Pakistan visiting flood-affected areas, told reporters: “We will only support a civilian, democratically elected government.

In contradiction to many media reports, the American spokesman praised the government for its response to the floods.

Holbrooke was also very generous in showering praises on he Pakistani government in its response to the flood crisis, saying: “I think the Pakistan government has done a fantastic job so far – and we are here to help in any way we can.”

Asked if the US would continue to support the military, the US envoy repeated that they will only support the military if it is part of the present government.

The US envoy also added that the US was happy to work with the Pakistani army as long as it “is a part of this government.”

You will remember that Wishful Journalists like Shaheen Sehbai have been predicting for years that there will be a US-backed military caretaker government. This same story has had many names in the past two years: ‘Minus One Formula’, ‘Bangladesh Model’, ‘French Revolution’ and now finally a new name…nonsense.

Perhaps now the media fortune tellers can put away their crystal balls and do some actual reporting.

Shaheen Sehbai Looking Into the Future

Shaheen Sehbai Looking Into the Future

It wonders no one when Pakistani journalists instead of reporting the happenings try to report to make things happen. Reporting with a certain slant was never new but taking this to a level where journalists start writing predictions is entirely a new phenomenon. Two journalists have mastered this art of predictions. Dr. Shahid Masood and Mr. Shaheen Sehbai.

In his latest analysis “Zardari on his own after US pulls support” in The News, Mr. Sehbai has announced that President of Pakistan Mr. Asif Ali Zardari has been abandoned by USA. Without going into details what does he really mean. One needs to ask how come Mr. Sehbai reached this conclusion, whether he was informed by White House or the State department. Mr. Sehbai never tell us what are his sources. Journalism cannot continue for ages without naming the sources. Since last one year Mr. Sehbai has not even filed a single story in which there is clear mention of sources.

Anyone who understands the international politics and nuances of diplomatic statements understands that the officials that represent the different governments do not talk about individuals. Even if and I again say even if they are supporting a certain political actor in a foreign country.

Mr. Sehbai has also made a claim that Ambassador Holbrooke, the point man on Pakistan and Afghanistan, has lost his role in Obama administration. Again this is something that the media has been deducing from different developments in USA. There however has not been any official communication or action that can testify to media suspicions. Whether it is Pakistan media or US media, until and unless there is a proper official announcement, Richard Holbrooke is there and performing his role.

To further educate Mr. Sehbai, President Asif Ali Zradari was elected in Pakistan by the Electoral College and obviously Richard Holbrooke was not the presiding officer for that election. In fact Pakistan Peoples Party won the elections and formed the government much before President Obama came to power and appointed Richard Holbrooke as his point man on Pakistan and Afghanistan. To Mr. Zardari is on his own.

Mr. Sehbai then tells us that Mr. Aitezaz Ahsan has been assessed by USA think tanks since long and is now being considered a replacement. He bases his conclusion on some meeting that was held back in the year 2006 with some leading lights of think tanks with Aitezaz in attendance. Sehbai reports that the talk was general!! And since Mr Sehbai insists one must agree to him that this general talk meant a lot for Pakistan in the year 2010!! Great.

It appears that soon Mr. Sehbai is going to launch another website. Not something like South Asia Tribune, but something more paranormal. He will have his photo with worry beads and will be asking you to send him your birth charts and get reports on your future. Good Luck Mr. Sehbai with the future profession.
